Estevez hits the mark in Kennedy story
March 11th 2007 08:24
"He saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it."
Senator Edward M. Kennedy at Robert Kennedy's funeral, 8th of June,1968
Emilio Estevez, formerly a member of the 1980s brat pack team that starred in many of the era's hit teen flicks including 'Pretty in Pink', 'The Breakfast Club' and 'St.Elmo's Fire', tries another hand at writing and directing drama 'Bobby', 16 years after his first attempt in 'Men at Work'.
'Bobby' captures the tragic story of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the stories of 22 people also staying at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California where Robert, affectionately known as Bobby, was shot three times on June 5th, 1968. Kennedy died the next day.
While the tale of Robert's brother, President John F. Kennedy's assassination five years prior has been told numerous times, the Robert Kennedy assassination story has rarely been told but never been forgotten by the American people. Just months after the death of Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King, the death of Robert shook the world into a deep mourning. Just months away from going for the Presidential role, Robert was a favourite amongst people for his views on poverty, the large cultural divide between blacks and whites in America and was clearly opposed to the war in Vietnam.
Estevez writes a fabulous story that ties 22 people together, including the five lesser known people that were shot alongside Robert in the kitchen of the Ambassador by crazed Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan.
Estevez stars along with an impressive cast list including father Martin Sheen, Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore, Lindsay Lohan, Elijah Wood, Lawrence Fishburne, Heather Graham, Helen Hunt, William H. Macy and Joshua Jackson, amongst others.
Peppered with television footage of the real Senator Kennedy travelling around America as he tried to win the hearts of the American people, many of Kennedy's powerful speeches are played over the course of the movie, some proving to be quite haunting.
The film has a very deep sense of 'What if' to it. Just how different would the world would be if none of the three men who made a large impact on American politics in the 1960s had been killed? Would Robert have gone on to lead America out of Vietnam? What sort of state would America be in today? What sort of state would the world be in today?
A film that really makes you think about how much impact one moment can have on an entire country's future.
